Inspections of labour accommodation camps in Dubai will be stepped up in January in a bid to raise the quality of living standards.

Dubai Police's Human Rights General Department will intensify its campaign after more than 70 per cent of inspected accommodations were found violating health and safety standards this year.

"We are committed to protecting workers' rights and the increase in the number of the inspection unit staff will enable us to crack down on violators in more effective and quick ways," said Major-Doctor Ahmad Al Mansouri, director of Freedoms and Right department, in comments published by UAE daily Gulf News on Thursday.

He said the inspection unit had inspected 357 labour accommodations this year out of which 70 per cent were found violating safety and health rules.

The violations, he added, were discovered in the three major industrial areas of Al Quoz, Jebel Ali and Sonapur.

The unit has referred four cases to court this year on the charge of endangering the lives of workers.
